Table Row Size

Does Informix use one extra byte for a column which allows null ? I use row size from dbaccess.table.status or informix.systables.rowsize to calculate how much disk space the table needs. I noticed that there is an extra byte used for varchar type column but no extra byte used for columns allow null. Can anyone verify this ? Thanks in advance !
