Cross platform (PC/Mac) databases & my (somewhat biased) impressions: Microsoft FoxPro (XBASE language) --Based on an ancient database language (XBASE). Big slow and pokey on the Mac (although 3.0 version is supposed to be much faster). ACIUS 4th Dimension (proprietary language) --Very small resource requirements on the Mac (try 2 meg RAM!), somewhat larger on the PC (8 meg). Biggest downside is that it uses a proprietary server (although it has ODBC connectivity) and language. A machine language compiler is available. Blyth Omnis 7 (proprietary-language like visual basic) --Nice package. Quick on both PC and Mac. Biggest downside is that the company (Blyth) who makes it seems to be having trouble staying afloat. Good choice for SQL front ends. Oracle Power Objects (oracle basic) --Sloooooooooooow (supposedly much better if you dump the local "blaze" (hah!) database engine). Personal Oracle ????? Powerbuilder --Slow on the Mac. Very resource intensive. 24+ megs manditory. FileMaker Pro --Only useful for fairly simple solutions. Programming/Scripting is very limited, but developing solutions is incredibly quick. Very easy to use.
