Malcolm,
Please check the following web page:
http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/linux/ids.html
This will give you the right hint! Your glibc (libpthread) is not correct.

It's not funny any more!

After my problems last week starting IDS 9.3 on SUSE
Linux (SLES 8) we decided to rebuild the client's
machine from the ground up. We reinstalled Linux and
in the process removed passwd and group files. We
then installed IDS 9.40.UC3 and today I am trying to
get IDS to work. I did what I normally do. I edited
the onconfig file and did an oninit -i. It wouldn't
come up. So I aborted everything, and started again.
This time I did oninit -iv and it failed once again.
It gets to the bit about "Bringing up ADM VP" and then
just hangs for ever. ps -ef | grep oninit shows that
there are two oninit processes running, and the second
one is eating cpu power. ipcs shows that two segments
of shared memory have been allocated.
In desperation I tried running onmonitor and ran
through parameters - initialize and went through all
the screens without making any changes. And this time
it came up.
I shutdow IDS by Take Offline and tried to run oninit
-v again. Still it would not come up.
Now I'm really baffled.
I'll even offer a prize of some unworn Informix
T-shirts or polo-shirts to the person who can unravel
this mystery. (The winner payes the postage! I'm not
that generous!)
