New Era or what?

-> We're searching for a gui front end to replace our -> character-based Fourgen running with SE. -> Is New Era the answer? Anybody with experience in doing this -> port? -> -> If not New Era, what? Visual Basic? Thanks! Umm, wow, this is a really weird question. No product will actually take your 4GL and run it as a GUI except for Informix-4GL for Windows. But it is a dog from a performance perspective. Anything else (including NewEra) will require extensive redevelopment (and I *mean* extensive). What I can't understand is why anybody would actually want to. If I could chuck this out into the forum for general debate, I would like to know what the material advantages of Client/Server GUI apps are in the business environment. I sometimes feel like I come from the stone age, but the only time I see GUI's being essential are when you do something like CAD, biometrics, imaging, etc. Employing c/s for a core business app just shifts the stress of the application from the server to the network and means that you have to have access to serious network management skills as well as everything else. Have I missed the point to c/s/gui, or what? I would really appreciate some enthusiastic debate on this, so please respond. billy.wheeler@digitec.co.za ---- Digitec Online - South Africa Telnet: bbs.digitec.co.za
