How to test the performance of a Database?

Hi all, I am trying to find out if there is a tool to generate queries (large number) for doing some stress testing of the database. TIA Chakri
I worked on benchmarks and used the following Mercury Loadrunner Performix Rational Prevue The way it works is that you can record ( capture ) a session of an application , the replay it by # of users , the scripts are written in a "C" like language , usually you have to populate you dbs with pattern data and then you make the scripts generate the keys within the range of your data pattern . It allows not only to test you db performance but also your app performance , data contention and the hardware itself . I know that Prevue also supports driect ODBC like connections to push SQL's to the dbs . All those tools are very expensive , easy to spent 100K + on a benchmark .
