Re: IIUG Board election results
Posted in 2008
Not a technical thread at all: it's a flame war over alleged misconduct by the IIUG board president and the fairness of board elections, with anonymous posters accusing the leadership of pushing out dissenters and others dismissing the claims. Side arguments cover whether the IIUG matters to Informix's market position, an IDC report hosted by Oninit being IBM-commissioned rather than independent, Informix being an unpublicised but widely embedded product, plus personal jabs about spelling and drinking. No facts are substantiated and no resolution is recorded.
Auto-generated by DrWatson from the posts below — may be imperfect; read the full thread.
Why is this so ooh oooooohhoo important? Informix is a product that will be measured by the market, nothing more. More importantly, why is the IIUG so important to warrant such a rant? Who really cares??????? Is Informix gaining market share because of anything the IIUG has done? If they have done some good, then that's a great thing, but in the grand scheme of things, nobody cares. Really. It's true. Informix is still an unknown in the market. Until somebody actually markets the product it doesn't really matter. Really. It's true. Really. 8-) slickwillie999@gmail.com wrote: > It's no surprise that the current board president does whatever he > likes...even when someone raises a serious concern, nobody takes it > seriously. > > Neil was on the board before the chaos started, and left right before > the dictatorship ensued. This is a good paper and I'm glad to see you publicising it. You know though, don't you, that it was commissioned by IBM? Well, of course you know, you'll have had to get permission to put it on your website. Not to "diss" the report. It's good collateral for Informix. But don't pretend that it's any more independent than, say, the Oracle-commissioned reports sometimes criticised on this newsgroup.

Separate the product from the organization. The rant was about the IIUG not the product. You took this thread as a self-serving moment to promote your services, completely dismissing the thread. Why don't you try again and write something relevant to the thread. Unfortunately you not only wasted a great opportunity to reply, you replied to me about a comment I didn't make! The IIUG may be big in your world, but nobody outside the IIUG board of directors cares. Really. Nobody cares. Not even the general population of IIUG members. Really. You're wasting your time--which is what I'm doing! :-)

I think you used to talk about your favorite single malt, which is much more interesting than anything else you post. Personally I think a good martini and a puff of pot is far more engaging, but that's just me. ;-)
Indeep, Sometimes when you know too much, its a bad thing. You may accidentily talk about things that you're not supposed to know and may not be good for public consumption. Speaking about consumption, I never posted drunk. The reason I love a good single malt is that you have to take your time and drink it slowly. This is so you can appreciate the subtle blend of flavors. I'd say the same thing about red wines, but I now get headaches from the sufides. With respect to a good Martini, I hope you meant vodka and not gin. And even with vodka, the quality of vodka will greatly effect the taste. (Yes, the trouble is that I have a licquor store, Binny's, two blocks away and they carry a shit load of great stuff to try.) But I'd be careful about drinking, and lighting up while posting. Both are depressents and frankly some of the posts made here are depressingly pathetic. I mean no offense, but why hasn't anyone talked about combining IDS's security and HA capabilitys to make a suburb back end to an e-commerce system? > From: indeep@indeep.com> Subject: Re: IIUG Board election results> Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2008 23:10:31 -0800> To: informix-list@iiug.org> > Ian Michael Gumby wrote:> > > > > > > From: theharlequin36@hotmail.com> > > Subject: Re: IIUG Board election results> > > Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2008 08:58:32 +0000> > > To: informix-list@iiug.org> > > > >> > > Not to "diss" the report. I like the yippie approach, it allows less alcohol over time and yet achieves the same result. But back to your original posting about the IIUG. The IIUG is a hybrid organization, or should I say hydra organization, having two or more main goals in its charter, depending on where you stand. If you're at IBM, it's a low-cost ( read cheap ) way to market to the installed base of users of a product. If you're an IIUG member, you could have the impression that the IIUG is there to represent end-user interests. If you're a VAR it's yet another organization to market into and out of. The point is, while you might argue your view, in the grand scheme of things the people that really care about any of it are the ones with the purse strings, and as long as they are happy, nothing you say will matter. From the end-user perspective, you have almost no access to what's really going on other than outbound communications about monthly events. So complaining about things in a public forum is almost pointless unless you can bring some facts to the table and not gossip. Even if you have facts you had better be very prepared to back them up, and I'd be very cautious about complaining publicaly, especially when most of the people you will reach will be able to do little if anything to help. Your complaints my friend are simply the tree falling in the forest with no one there to hear it fall. Or if it were actually heard, there are other sounds of money making more noise, and thus making your complaint even more irrelevant. If you want to be more effective, I'd say post a solution and generate some grass roots momentum. It's harder than you think, and will consume most if not all of your time.
