Encryption in the engine?
Posted in 2009
A poster asks whether Informix's built-in AES/3DES encryption (which is software-based) can be hooked into hardware encryption — accelerator cards, network appliances or GPU offload — arguing IBM should provide such hooks since rolling your own isn't viable for a niche product. No technical answer is given: the thread degenerates into a personal flame exchange with another regular about the poster's posting style. No resolution, workaround or product information is recorded.

Ok, so yeah, you have AES and 3DES encryption. But its software based. How can you seamlessly connect to a hardware based package. I mean there are add on cards and network appliances that are specifically designed to do the encryption. Add to this the newer libraries and higher end video cards that let you use the GPU for advanced math and off load this from the CPU. This would enhance the existing encryption without having to roll your own.

Oh for fuck's sake, Gumby, give it a fucking rest. -- Cheers, Obnoxio The Clown http://obotheclown.blogspot.com -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by OpenProtect(http://www.openprotect.com), and is believed to be clean.

C'mon, don't you read the popular press that talk about data theft? You can purchase a system that will encrypt the data on the disk in real time. Great for laptops but how many times do you see someone pulling a hard drive out of a system in a data center? Since you're in the UK, why don't you ask RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland) about how they just got hacked? Ask them if data encryption and better authentication are important. -G

I'm just fucking tired of reading every single thread you start: "Gumby is right, everyone else is wrong, look at me." Don't you have customers to bother, or are they sick of your shit as well? -- Cheers, Obnoxio The Clown http://obotheclown.blogspot.com -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by OpenProtect(http://www.openprotect.com), and is believed to be clean.

I don't see how this thread has anything to do with me. I'm asking about a feature that may exist or if anyone's thought about it. No where am I saying something critical of IDS. At least not in this post. The point is that if the hooks aren't there to allow one to use hardware based encryption, then it would be easier for IBM to add it, than for someone to roll their own solution. It doesn't pay to 'roll your own' because Informix is a niche product and this type of encryption would be even more of a niche. There's value in it, but not as a reseller. As to my clients, they actually pay me for my opinions, thats part of being a consultant. Or did you forget that when you took on a diffferent role? I'm starting to wonder if you're not the wank king. ;-) -G
