Locked tables

I seem to have a rather frequent problem of when I want to alter a table, add a new index to it, etc., I find the table is locked for no apparent reason. There seems to be no SQL command I can find to force the table to be unlocked. I have to reboot the machine to unlock it. How is a lock set on the table, and why isn't lock status (and who has it locked) mentioned in normal table status? Any hints on how to force the unlocking of a table?
