Migrate DB

Hello,
I have to migrate all data from an IDS 7.31UD1 server to an other IDS 7.31UD1,
but don't know which is the best way to do it: dbexport, onunload, high
performance loader...
It takes about 60GB to transfer, the biggest table has about 30 million
records in it.
Does anyone has an advice?
Thanks.

It depends. Can you afford the down time? Are the server machines and OS's
the same?

First of all: 7.31.UD1 is not the best choice. In 7.31 you should go to
7.31.UD8 or above or migrate to version 10.
If you move to the same platform you can use ontape and restore to quick move
to the other box or you
can shut down the informix instanz and then copy the devices using "dd", copy
onconfig and sqlhosts and start on the new box.
Good luck !

Hi,
if platform also is the same, then probably archive and restore is
the easiest if you want to have a rather exact copy (i.e. same
layouts for databases, dbspaces and chunks).
I'm not sure 7.31.UD1 already supports external backup and
restore ... but that would be an option as well.
If platform is different, then it will either be dbexport or High
Performance
Loader (HPL). If this is a one-time activity, then dbexport may be easiest
as it does not need much of configuration, etc. If you plan to do this
regularly, then HPL may be worth looking at - it requires some setup and
configuration to make it perform really well.
onunload/onload ... well, I rarely use (used) it. Strictly spoken it is
only supported for same platform. At "own risk" you can try to employ
it across platforms within restrictions that byte order and word size must
be the same (e.g. not usable between Sparc vs. Intel or 32-bit and
64-bit platforms). If I remember correctly it allows some "restructuring"
of the data, e.g. put a table in a different dbspace, etc.
Regards,
Martin
