health of a server
Posted in 2016
User asked how to assess Informix server health and which onstat commands to use. Respondents explained this is complex: basic checks include running "onstat -", verifying connectivity, confirming query execution (SELECT/INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE), and performance metrics.

Hi
how to know a ids server health ?
what are onstat commands to use ? and what are the results exprected to say
that a server is healthy or not ?
Thank you in advance
Well... you may be amazed, but you think about htis carefully there's no
simple answer... not for Informix or any other database server:
1- It must be running.... a simple "onstat -" will tell you that. But...
2- You must be able to connect to it... and if you can't it may mean the
network has an issue...
3- But "what network"? As you may have listeners spread across different
networks
4- But even if you're able o connect... can you do queries?
SELECT/INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE? You may be able to run a SELECT and can't do
an INSERT (if it's blocked in a checkpoint, or due to a long transaction)
5- And even if you do a query, did it run fast enough?
etc...

My email works... but I don't check it frequently...

That's a HUGE subject. Too big for a single forum post. Suggestions:
- Search the forum for entries that include the keywords "tuning",
"performance", and similar.
- Go to the IIUG member pages and the IIUG Conference materials and
download any presentations about performance tuning, monitoring, sysmaster,
onstat, etc. There should be many be several be several community members
including me. Study these.
- Download my ratios.shr_ak package from the IIUG Software Repository,
install the ratios.sql stored procedure in your sysmaster database and run
the newratios.sh script periodically to see several metrics that will give
you a quick overview of your server's health.
- Contact a reputable Informix consultancy to perform a health check on
your server and perhaps set up 24x7 remote monitoring for you. Some good
choices are my own consultancy (www.askdbmgt.com), Advanced DataTools (
www.advancedatatools.com), Oninit (www.oninit.com), Oninit UK (
www.oninitgroup.com), Ardenta in the UK (www.ardenta.com), and there are
others.
- Attend the 2016 IIUG Conference in Florida in the spring: (iiug2016.org).
The greatest source of Informix knowledge in one place and time.
- Take the Advanced DataTools Advanced Performance Tuning course that
Lester Knutsen and I present jointly. The next session is in July:

Hi.
A good starting point if you are not familiar with Informix, is to install OAT
(Open Admin Tool), a free web interface for your connection, and start a
"health check".
It should give you some pretty good stuff about your server.

As others have said, this is a huge topic...
I did a presentation at the IIUG 2015 conference on "Monitoring the Health
of your Database". It doesn't concentrate much on the individual onstats,
but was intended to highlight just a few of the things that you can check.

your_Database.pdf
Outside of the IIUG resources that Art mentioned, you may want to check out
some of the webcasts here:
http://advancedatatools.com/Informix/Webcasts.html
There's a couple on using the sysmaster database which may be helpful.
As Art already said, there are training courses available which will cover
this topic and companies (such as Advanced DataTools...) that can perform
detailed healthchecks of your system.

Mike
