As I remember, basically it's this: Files you need on the server side: /etc/hosts.equiv /etc/hosts /etc/services with an entry specifying the port and protocol, e.g. star 1541/tcp or sqlexec 1525/tcp You do not need an $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts file on the server side an all cases, but you need one if * multiple sqlexecd daemons should run * the servername in the DATABSE statement is not the same as the remote UNIX server's TCP/IP hostname * The servicename you are trying to access is not sqlexec And you have to tun the daemon by "sqlexecd [servicename]" where servicename defaults to sqlexec and must match an entry in /etc/services If you need also an $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts file, you must enter the servername specified in this file into the SERVERALIAS of onconfig.std. Files you need on the client side: /etc/hosts (/etc/hosts.equiv) /etc/services (should be equal on all systems) $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts with an entry like this: remserver tcp remhost star | | | onconfig /etc/hosts /etc/services (server side) you then access the database by DATABASE salesdb@remserver This looks up remserver in /etc/hosts and $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts (servername), finds the servicename star, looks it up in /etc/services, finds port 1541 and talks to the remote system. The remote system calls sqlexecd according to the port in /etc/services. If sqlexecd is started with a servicename (e.q. sqlexecd star, necessary if it's Informix Online and not SE - as far as I remember) it looks up the servicename in $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts, extracts the servername and connects to the database engine. Hope this helps, although it's confusing. Have a try. Helmut Leininger
