Which tool should I choose? We are currently trying to decide which tool to choose for developing our application. Our previous version was developed in INFORMIX-4GL, but we now need to: o be database independant o have a windows interface We have been looking at VB, Powerbuilder, Access, NewEra, Progress and Delphi. We have discarded VB and Access for numerous reasons (don't ask). Would anyone like to share their experiences with us? I would certainly like to see a general discussion on the net regarding this issue. Among the important topics are: o how well is the tool integrated with Windows. I.e. DDE, OLE2, VBX, OCX etc. o time to market/time to develop an application. It seems to me that several tools lack the old "CONSTRUCT" facility in INFORMIX-4GL, which enabled us to let the users do QBE. o technical support o database independance. We would like to run on Oracle, Informix, Sybase etc. o Object orientation o Ability to add inn VBX and OCX objects. o speed of the application we develop So far we are inclined to leave NewEra alone and continue with the investigation of Progress, Delphi and Powerbuilder. Delphi is very impressing, but their native Informix driver does not work with I-NET for Windows v5, so we have to use the ODBC driver, which is soooo sloooow. Progress seems very fast, but again, where are the standard methods for Query, Next, Previous, Insert, Update and so on? Furthermore it seems to me that Progress does not really implement object orientation very well. Any opinions, anyone ? Regards, Steinar Overbeck Cook Balder Programvare AS
