I'm gathering advice from experienced database users. I am mainly looking for product names that I will reseach, so please limit your responces to personal email. I have an industrial customer that wishes to catalogue the components that they use for each product and the characteristic properties of each batch. The software will run over a IBM compatable network on pentium based machines in a client-server environment. - Since it is an industrial application, access to the information must be subject to passwords to read/review the reports - The entry of fields are subject to individual passwords as well (to ensure qualified personnel entered the info and for accountability). This requires that the inventory database be able to interact with a database of personnel/position/password. - Each product will have a standard "recipe". This requires that the inventory database be able to interact with a database of recipes. - It must be "tunable" so specific features may be added. SQL would be fine, but other languages can be considered - Finally if a standard interface could be (semi-)automatically generated, that would be excellent. The people using this might only have a high school diploma... so the interfaces should be restrictive. I realize that Oracle, Fox Pro, etc... would be suitable for this type of project, but I would like to do as little coding as possible. I am interested in (good and bad) experiences that people have had with MSS and QAD, as well as other suitable products. Finally, I think the most difficult and essential fields will be the checking of passwords for data entry and the generation of the interface. -thanks in advance -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chuck Monahan kgb@eclipse.ece.ucsb.edu http://bears.ucsb.edu/personnel/kgb.html There's a place for those who love their poetry, It's right across from the sign that says "Prose Only" -TMBG
