Well, these delays looks to me like some kind of "timeout". And one of these timeouts could be DNS host address/reverse lookup. It can happen either on server or on client side with equal probabillity. To check this on server try to ping the client by name (or try using nslookup and resolve the client address, and then try resolving the client hostname by its address (the PTR record)). Then, try to ping the server by name (not by IP address) from the client side. If ping or nslookup is running without any delays then the problem is not the DNS configuration.
