Hi Elizibeth,
You have to take care about the environment variables. Especially ONCONFIG
which specifies the onconfig.xxx you want to use.
Then you must have separated disk space (rootdbs ...). In this way you are
starting up another "database system" (= another instance).
Alternatively, you could create your own database in the existing
environment.

This opinion is mine and not necessarily that of my employer.
No guarantees whatsoever.
Be very careful with oninit. oninit by itself will start up your databases
but oninit -i will wipe the databases as this command is used for
initalising disk space.

Hi! I've inherited DBA responsibilities for On-line 7.2 and have set up
a test area for learning -- going through the manual. I've set up a new
onconfig.new file and the environment using shared memory for now. I
believe the next step is oninit -i but my manual gives lots of warnings
about this destroying data so I'm looking for some confirmation that
databases with other onconfig.xxx files (not active) are not going to be
affected/wiped out when I do this.
Also, anyone know a very good Online DBA Training manual/guide.
Thanks much.
