Impact on creating Indexes on a OLTP systems!

Hi I would like to know the impact of creating indexes on a busy OLTP environment on Informix 7.10 UC2 ON HP-UX 9.1 [ One CPU]. I need to run a script across all identical databases[ 77 databases] that create indexes .What factors do I need to consider to keep the engine performance, least affected ? TIA , Hari
