Quickie HDR Question
Posted in 2013
Dan planned a Friday cutover from old primary/secondary hardware to two new servers currently running as RSS nodes, and asked whether 'onmode -d make primary <name>' takes its own name or the partner's, and when to re-point the RSS nodes. Art gave the syntax (onmode -d primary <secondary_name>, onmode -d secondary <primary_name>), but Dan hit 'DR: Wrong type - Server must be standard type'. Madison Pruet explained an RSS node can't be promoted straight to primary; it must first be converted to HDR secondary. Art outlined the full sequence without shutting anything down: demote the current HDR secondary to RSS, promote the chosen new RSS to HDR secondary, swap primary/secondary (hdrmkpri.sh/hdrmksec.sh), then demote the old primary to RSS and promote the other new node to HDR secondary.

Hey Folks,
IDS 11.70.FC7W2X9
OS AIX 6
I have what seems to be a silly question but I need to make sure before this
Friday...
With DRAUTO=0, I take my primary offline and want my secondary to become new
primary. onmode -d make primary <name>. Do I give this it's own name or the
name of the intended new secondary? I tested using it's own name and
everything seems to work as designed but just gotta have that backup answer
before some switchover work this weekend.
On a related note, I have 2 RSS replicates of the original primary. Do I issue
the onmode -d RSS <primary name> before or after the make primary command?
Thanx,
Dan
onmode -d primary <secondary_name>
On the new secondary:
onmode -d secondary <primary_name>
The RSS's should switch over, but there's no harm in running the
onmode -d RSS <primary_name>
commands there as well.

Art,
When I take the primary down then issue onmode -d primary <old RSS name> on
the current secondary, I get:
onmode -d primary ace_prod_741DR: Unable to change server type
onmode: Please check the message log for any additional errors.online.log says:
DR: Wrong type - Server must be standard type
Any thoughts?
thanx,
dan
Have you changed the old RSS that will be primary to either standalone mode
first?

No. Perhaps, I should start over.
On Friday, night, we are switching a large and very important database
instance to new h/w for both primary and secondary. I am putting new boxes in
as RSS this week. Boxes look like this:
Oldprimary
Oldsecondary
Newrss1
Newrss2
I want to end up with Newrss1 as primary & Newrss2 as secondary. I will
re-establish Oldprimary & Old secondary as rss after the fact because of
naming changes on the old boxes.
If I take down Oldprimary, then make Nrss1 the new primary, you are saying
that I have to make it standard first. Will that mean that I then have to
restore it again? That will not be in the cards.
Also do you have any thoughts about using the onmode -d make primary <Newrss1>
command to make that happen? I did run through that scenario in testing and it
worked however was unsure if I should have given it the new secondary's name
and would be very interested in hearing if you have any nightmare stories
about that as well as if I would need to restore using the scenario you are
suggesting.
Please do not take this as me being difficult. My only motivation is that
Friday happens with no suprises or restores necessary (that is about a 12 hour
process that I cannot afford).
Thanx,
Dan

Is there a reason you do not want to make
1) Oldsecondary ==> oldrss3
2) Newrss1 ===> tempsecondary
then do a fail over to the tempsecondary making it the newprimary

OK, then here's what you have to do:
0) Don't shutdown any server.
1) Demote the current HDR secondary into an RSS secondary
2) Promote the RSS secondary that you want to become primary into an hdr
secondary with the current primary as primary
3) Swap the hdr primary and secondary (use hdrmkpri.sh & hdrmksec.sh)
4) Demote the old primary to an rss secondary
5) Promote the other new rss secondary to hdr secondary

Yes there is. The old servers are being renamed in this process after making
the new servers primary and secondary with cnames created to point old apps to
new boxes so have to completely break off old servers then resync after the
fact using new names.

You can not directly convert a RSS into a primary because RSS synchronize
checkpoints. You must first convert the RSS into HDR secondary.
