GIF or JPG images in a report
Posted in 1998
Hi all. This has *GOT* to be in the FAQ but I could not find it. I have a client who wants GIF or JPG images included in some reports. I have seen the article in Appendix-M of the FAQ and some brave soul at my company tried it. Boioioioingggg... Clearly, 4GL is not the right tool for this stuff. The client is not likely to accept Viewpoint as a reporting tool since they are mostly a Unix shop working with vt100-like terminals. (Yeah, some PC's.) I guess a better idea would be to have the 4GL report function generate the text portion of the report but embed within the text some commands and directives naming the gif file and some framing and/or positioning info. Then the report could passed on to another package which would reprint the text and draw the pictures as specified in the generated report. Bottom Line: Can anyone tell me about such second-layer print formatting products? I am currently looking into the capabilities of a2ps (info for curious: http://www.inf.enst.fr/~demaille/a2ps) but there must be a commercial package that will do this. I doubt if I would want to use nroff/troff directly but a package that produces the code for these might fit the bill just fine.
