Informix IDE
Posted in 2009
A user on IDS 9.4 asked which IDEs/GUI tools can connect to Informix, free or commercial. No single answer, but the thread collected many suggestions: dbaccess and Jonathan Leffler's sqlcmd (IIUG Software Repository), SQuirreL SQL, WinSQL, RazorSQL, Aqua Data Studio, AGS Server Studio, ISA, OAT (IDS 11), IBM Data Studio, plus monitoring tools like iSpy, DBSonar and BMC Patrol. Generally, any ODBC/JDBC-capable client works. A side discussion noted Data Studio's visual explain and that Server Studio also offers a graphical query plan analyzer.

What are my options for IDE's to connect to Informix both free and nonfree. I know there is Data Studio and Toad is able to connect. What do most users here use?

If you are on IDS 11, OAT is pretty good.

We are running IDS 9.4 . I was just informed that I could use Pl/SQL or SQL Management studio to connect. I think I may need to download a plugin interface possibly. I can view the data with my ODBC connection in Pl/SQL.
How about these too: IBM AGS Server Studio IBM Informix Server Administrator (ISA) Opensource OAT Cobrasonic DBSonar IBM Informix iSpy Nimsoft Nimbus Database Monitoring Exact Solutions iWatch 6.0 - SQL Query-Level Performance Monitor RazorSQL - SQL Editor + Database administration tools BMC Performance Manager for Informix (formerly Patrol) Synametrics (indussoft) WinSQL Opensource SQuirreL :Universal SQL Client --- On Thu, 3/12/09, DAMIAN PECNIK <damian.pecnik@pgnmail.com> wrote: From: DAMIAN PECNIK <damian.pecnik@pgnmail.com> Subject: Re: Informix IDE [15116] To: ids@iiug.org Date: Thursday, March 12, 2009, 9:54 AM We are running IDS 9.4 . SquirrelSQL works, most others that support ODBC will work at some level or
other. Personally I use dbaccess and Jonathan Leffler's sqlcmd package
which you can download from the IIUG Software Repository (
www.iiug.org/software). Also there is Aubit4GL.

We at Fonterra use a combination of dbaccess and Aqua Data Studio.
www.aquafold.com
Aqua has Informix specific knowledge and from our experience listen to
suggestions for feature requests.
For a free option, WinSQL kind of works
www.synametrics.com/SynametricsWebApp/WinSQL.jsp. It's simple.

Which happens to be the only (?) tool that can show you a visual explain of
the queries...
If I had the time/knowledge I would like to do an XSLT to transform the XML
generated by the visual explain function into plain old text...
This would allow anybody to get an explain directly into good old
dbaccess... Anybody feeling adventurous?
All this for IDS 11.50 of course...

Fernando,
Server Studio, non-free, in all "Editions" of it I believe,
can show you a visual explanation of a query and the overhead
costs of the various components of it.
From the SS on-line help:
QUERY EXECUTION PLAN ANALYZER:
"Integrated graphical Query Execution Plan Analyzer allows you to get output
of EXPLAIN PLAN for all statements in the SQL script or just a selected
portion of it. It helps you to tune performance of your SQL queries by
analyzing, which indexes are used by Informix query optimizer. Execution
Plan is presented in a form of a diagram as well as a tree."
