Re: Informix on SUN vs HP

I'm with you Arun. I haven't looked into how HPUX 11 is doing, but it has to be a complete ar$e out rewrite, so good luck with that for awhile anyway. Solaris 2.5.1 or 2.6 vs. HPUX 10.2x is no contest for a system of any size. Solaris can give informix up to 4 GB of shared memory *for each instance on the machine*. Not sure where the limits are there, but it's probably beyond any sane config. HP runs out of gas at between 1 and 1.75 GB systemwide. The basic Ultrasparc CPU's are generally a bit slower than PA RISC, but you can get much larger SMP's from Sun. I suspect Sun's performance per buck is better too. I'm also of the opinion that Informix's best ports are to Sun. Use Veritas volume manager, Sun's stopped developing Disk Suite. Personally, I prefer raid 0+1 on a budget, or heavily cached disk arrays (EMC or Clariion) if you have the money and want screaming performance. That should keep you busy and break your budget....
