You have to install IDS on the client machine, then complete the sqlhosts
and services tables, in order to get dbaccess runing across machines.
Set INFROMIXSERVER to the entry in your (local) sqlhosts table, INFORMIXDIR
to your (local) Informix directory and presto!

PS You can then delete SOME of the informix from your client machine - but
not too mich!! You do not need to do anything with the engine just
installed.

Subject: Running dbaccess remotely problem
Hi,
I'm trying to setup a linux machine (redhat) to access Informix IDS 7.3
on another linux machine (redhat) using dbaccess. While running
dbaccess on my client machine, I get the error:
"Unknown error message 1202".
Following is my IDS server's settings:
sqlhosts:
---------
pump onipcshm pump_host sqlshm
pump_tcp onsoctcp punp_host sqltcp
etc/services:
-------------
sqltcp 1526/tcp
onconfig:
---------
DBSERVERNAME = pumpDBSERVERALIAS= pump_tcp
NETTYPE ipcshm,1,50,CPU
NETTYPE soctcp,1,50,NET
On the client side (which is also running RedHat), I did the following:
1. installed informix-connect v2.1,
2. copied dbaccess from the server machine over,
3. set the env INFORMIXDIR, PATH, TERM accordingly.
4. add an entry in /etc/services: sqltcp 1536/tcp.
Any idea why I cannot get dbaccess running on the client machine? Also
can we just copy dbaccess from 1 machine to another (same OS) and
expect it to work? Is this correct?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks !!!

Hi,
Is it mandatory for me to install IDS on the client machine in order to
get DBAccess to run the client machine? This would create a license
problem for me - I only have 1 copy of Informix IDS....
Thanks,

Hi,
as far as I know, it is enough to install Informix Connect on your client
machine. If this is installed you have to configure your sqlhost-file on
client-side.
If your remote server is called "server" and its located on server_machine
"computerx" and your "/etc/services"-file got an entry like:
port_server 2000/tcp #my remote informix server
than your sqlhost configuration on client should have an entry like:
server ontlitcp computerx port_server

Correct and Informix Connect is a FREE license on all platforms.

Does I-Connect include DB-Access? I suspect not -- I think not.
If I-Connect does not include DB-Access, then you do, strictly,
need a server on your machine to get a legitimate copy of DB-Access
to run.
I'm suspicious because we just got warned off for rewriting some
I4GL demo installation scripts to use DB-Access, and the concern
was raised that if you only have I-Connect on the machine, you do
not get DB-Access, so you couldn't run the demo installs, so you'd
have problems. If I-Connect does have DB-Access, then we're in the
clear. I'll have to investigate anyway...
