Informix requires that the IP address of a client connection is know in either the /etc/hosts file or from the DNS of the unix box running the informix database, however in version 5 the IP address MUST appear in the /etc/hosts file. We actually had to hardcode 500+ ip addresses in the /etc/hosts file because we had version 5 running at this particular site.
