Some reports were ad hoc for an administrator, some would be run daily, there was a lot of variety. What we settled on was...for something quick and dirty, we'd use Access from a PC using ODBC against a database residing on a DEC VAX. For something large (>5 mil. records) or something that would be used frequently, we used Sybase (also on a VAX accessed through a PC) with very good results. ODBC can be used to reach a lot of different database types...its strength is versitility in mixed data environments...NOT speed. MS is working on the ODBC speed issue, but I think it will only become somewhat tolerable...not something to use for mission critical functions on >2 or 3 million records. All disflamers apply...Cbehler@ix.netcom.com
