online logical log tapes only partially fill !!

Hi, I have a Sun Ultra enterprise server running Informix under Solaris 2.5.1 and using a 4mm cartidge drive for backup purposes. Our continous logical log backup tapes keep filling prematurely ?? i.e. - the backup asks for fresh tape and yet only contains 20 logical logs. This amounts to 20 meg of data in our setup - but our 90metre cartridges should hold over 2.5 gig !! Any ideas what could be amiss ??? There is no evidence of a fault with the drive. Des
