Is there any disk benefit gained from doing an Informix restore ? In other words, does a restore cause data to be placed more contiguously on the OS disk ? No. Restore (ontape and onbar) are page for page copies of the
database. People use
dbexport and dbimport for this sort of thing or alter index clustered
to reorg tables.

No. Boson explained it well. The other option is to use:
ALTER FRAGMENT FOR TABLE/INDEX <tablename> INIT IN <dbaspace|fragmentationexpression>.
<Dbspace|fragmentation expression> can be the same as the table's current
location or different.
