Re: Date Trivia

Alan Denney (aka Colonel Panic) responds to two date trivia topics - in essence: 1) Many countries switched from Gregorian to Julian calendars on a different date, so don't expect Informix to handle it. 2) Adding or subtracting months from a date may produce en error (eg. Jan 30 + 1 month). "The alternative would not be logical for everybody" is the response. My response to both of these is: CHOOSE AN ALTERNATIVE and DOCUMENT IT! Right now you are pleasing nobody (a far cry from pleasing everybody) except for a few theoriticians who are out there saying "BUT .... ". And if you are really interested in pleasing everybody, don't come out with different versions of Informix (that would be extremely painful), choose a default, but allow it to be altered through use of an environment variable... a technique already employed widely by Informix. The most painful alternative is the status quo - particularly not being able to rely on adding months to dates. I don't think I'm being unreasonable... does anyone else have an opinion? - Cathy Only beat DEAD horses.... they can't feel the pain. +-------------------------------+----------------------------------------+ | Cathy Kipp | Internet: ckipp@vth1.vth.colostate.edu | | Veterinary Teaching Hospital | | | Colorado State University | Voice: (303) 491-1294 | | Fort Collins, CO 80523 | Fax: (303) 491-1205 | +-------------------------------+----------------------------------------+
