Cosmo,
I do believe that OnBar is what you are looking for as long as your
storage manager is compatible with the XBSA (xopen backup storage API).
Check out the following info.....
also check out the following white paper...

-Enhanced Online Backup and Restore (ON-Bar)
ON-Bar works with third party storage management products to provide
backup
and restore capabilities for OnLine servers. The joint solution
provides:
- equivalent functionality to ON-Archive (online backup, parallel,
incremental, logical log, point-in-time recovery, etc.)
- ON-Tape equivalent ease of use
- unattended backups via a scheduler and job control
- support for autochanger, tape arrays, and jukebox devices
ON-Bar communicates with third party Storage Management Vendor (SMV)
libraries through the X/Open Backup Services API (X/BSA).
Informix will provide a storage management utility called Informix
Storage
Manager (ISM) at no additional cost starting with the Windows NT
3.51/4.0
versions of OnLine 7.22 (YE96) and UNIX versions of OnLine Dynamic
Server
7.3 (1H97). This would eliminate the need to purchase or own an SMV
product
in order to utilize ON-Bar. Customers may use ISM, which supports up to
four streams of parallelism and simple tape devices or SMV solutions
which
provide additional streams of parallelism and support for tape arrays,
autochangers, optical jukeboxes, and other fancy devices.
Streams of Devices $

BAR provides all the functionality of Ontape, plus it can backup and
restore
selected dbspaces on-line and in parallel. Additionally, BAR will be
equipped with a storage management API that conforms to the X/Open
Backup
Services API (X/BSA) standards. With this API, Informix allows
customers to
utilize the many sophisticated third party SMV subsystems in the market
today for performing advanced backup and restore operations such as
unattended backups and scheduled backups, as well as enabling customers
to
backup OnLine databases to autochanger devices.
BAR is as easy to use as Ontape and has many features and
functionalities
of ON-Archive. Following are some examples of command differences
between
BAR and ON-Archive (these examples assume that the tape devices have
already been configured through the storage manager's interface):
Function On-Archive ON-Bar
backup dbspace onarchive define/dbspaceset=yyy/dbspace=(xxx) onbar
-b xxx
or blobspace onarchive archive/dbspaceset=yyy
onarchive execute/request=n
whole system onarchive archive/dbspaceset=* onbar
-b -w
backup onarchive execute/request=n
warm restore onarchive retrieve/dbspaceset=yyy/dbspace=xxx onbar
-r xxx
onarchive retrieve/logfile
onarchive execute/request=n
onarchive execute/request=m
restore dbspace onarchive retrieve/dbspaceset=* onbar
-r -p
or blobspace onarchive execute/request=n
BAR Architecture
------------------
BAR separates the backup and restore procedure into two processes. The
first process involves extracting and restoring the data from and to the
OnLine server. This process is performed by the BAR utility. The
second
process involves writing and extracting data from the storage media. The
second process is performed by a storage manager, which can be a
third-party
product such as IBM ADSM or HP OmniBack II, or the Informix Storage
Manager
(ISM).
A backup or restore session may be initiated from either the storage
manager
or from BAR. If the session was initiated from BAR, then the utility
will
invoke a session with both the OnLine server and the storage manager. If
the
session was initiated from the storage manager, then the storage manager
will call BAR which will then establish a session with the OnLine server
and
the storage manager.
During backup, BAR retrieves the data from the OnLine server and passes
it
to the storage manager. The storage manager then writes the data to the
storage media. During restore, the process is reversed. The storage
manager
retrieves the data from storage media and passes it through BAR which
restores it to the OnLine server (see diagram).

Storage Manager
-----------------
As mentioned earlier, the storage manager can be a third-party product
provided by storage management vendor (SMV) such as IBM ADSM or HP
OmniBack
II, or it can be the Informix Storage Manager (ISM).
