First of all: you don't need to dbexport to disk. Dbexport -t option let you to export the database directly to tape. Second: you don't need to shutdown Informix server during dbexport. Dbexport just locks the database it exports in exclusive mode :-) As of online archiving you have to use ontape or onbar (if you have this utility bundled with your Informix release).
