OT: Interesting Aricle "The Problem with Informix"
Posted in 2004
Not a technical support thread — it's a discussion of an it-analysis.com opinion piece, "The Problem with Informix," about IBM's handling of the product after acquiring it. Posters agree the article captures IBM's awkward position, swap anecdotes (one user was pushed to migrate to DB2, dropped a doubled-price support contract but kept Informix, and later got a cold call from IBM asking whether he still used it), joke about IBM's left and right hands, and argue the acquisition still beat Informix's likely fate otherwise. No problem is solved; it's commentary only.

Hi All , Came across an article which I think kinda hits the nail on the head as far I can see. http://www.it-analysis.com/article.php?articleid=12334 Enjoy reading. No Flame wars just glad to see Informix in the news. Traveller

I agree that it seems to sum up perfectly the absurdity of the position into which IBM has got itself. Interestingly the author works for Bloor, who produced a year or so ago a review of Informix users' attitudes so favourable towards IBM that it was greeted with open-mouthed incredulity by IBM users, partners and employees alike.

IBM was very pleased to hear that we still do. If I remember the time short after IBM bought Informix... I once got a call with a young Lady trying to convince us to kick Informix and switch to DB2. I asked here for 1.5Million DM to rewrite our applications. That was this call. Later on they almost doubled the support contract price. I kicked the support contract, but stayed with Informix. So: it's nice to recognize that IBM is able to learn. Joerg Happy Informix User since 4.x in 1994

IBM was very pleased to hear that we still do. I guess IBM called to ask this question because, as you have allowed support to lapse, they have no way of knowing if you still use Informix?

But I was still surprised because it is more then two years since kicking the support. But: They did not know (or realize?) that we are also working with a new purchased Online 9.x on Linux since a year and paying support.... Sometimes I think the right hand does never know what the left hand is doing. ;-)

You have to consider the alternatives. Ascential was selling off the database because PG and everyone thought the DB wars were over and Informix lost. Looking at Sybase, they lost focus on their core product and because of that, they will never be thought of as a first tier player, and soon to be a footnote in history. That would have been the fate of Informix had not someone with the deep pockets of IBM snatched Informix at a bargin price. (Informix was a steal!) The acquistion by IBM made sense, albeit I don't think IBM knew exactly what they were getting. I don't think that IBM thought out why Informix's Loyal customer base was so loyal, especially after White/Finocchio/Dexmier's fsck ups. But hey, what do I know?
