There is at least one non-programmer's book about OODB. It's written by David A. Taylor: Object Oriented Technology, A Manager's Guide. It's not about any specific OODB, but Taylor comes from Servio who sell a major OODB, GemStone, and so he has this system in mind. Nonetheles, it's a very good general introduction into the topic - if you are as interested in 'why' as in 'how'.
