debugging esql code

I have just started programming embedded SQL using esql 7.2 under Windows NT 4.0. I have no problem writing the code and compiling it from a DOS prompt, but I do not know how to bring it in to Visual C++ 4.0 and debug it. The manuals do not help me with this. I have also noticed people saying that they are doing it in C++. Right now I am writing C code because the esql compiler does not recognize C++ code. IF I can use C++ code, I would be even happier. Any help would be greatly appriciated.
