INFORMIXDIR location

In the past, our INFORMIXDIR was always set to /usr/informix meaning that it was on the root drive and partition (our version of unix combines root and /usr in the same partition, some don't). Does it make better sense to put the stuff in INFORMIXDIR on another mounted filesystem so that it won't be "contending" for the drive with the OS? Or is there really no significant difference?
