Erratic error 408 from ESQL/C

Fellow Informix'ers, Every now and then a query in our application fails with an error code of 408. We have'nt been able to duplicate the scenario and make the error occur again. The manual's description of 408 does not seem to make sense. Any ideas / suggestions?
