other options if making a table raw doesn't help with the in place
alters
1) create a new table that is raw with the columns as you want them
and then insert into the new raw table drop the old table and then
rename the new table to the old table name change it to type standard.
Create the indexes on the new tables rebuild any constraints. I know
that the inserts into the raw table won't log in the raw table.
2) Add log space
3) muck with high water marks for long tx (at your own risk)
4) turn logging off on the database.
