I'd also add S-Designor Data Architect(by Powerbuilder/Sybase) to the list. I recently compared it to ERwin and preferred S-Designor hands down. First off, it fully supports many DBs (obviously including Informix, with support of features such as extents, round robin, dbspaces, etc), even though it's sold by Sybase. Here are some of my findings: S-Designor Windows 95 Compliant(long file names, writing to recently used file list) Allows lists of tables, columns, relationships to be manipulated independently of the picture. (For example, you can see all tables that have a relationship with table x in a list which is very useful when your picture starts out as spaghetti.) Allows any 2 fields to be related, not just the keys. Shows the join fields in the physical picture - useful to give to developers. Has 2 levels, logical and physical. Allows you to specify 1 logical entity to correspond to 2 physical entities for performance reasons, for example. Has some nice formatting features such as bitmaps(for logos) and automatic date printing (to avoid confusion about versions). ERwin is lacking all of these. -- dbs David Samson, Senior Database Researcher dsamson@ndc.co.il News Datacom Research Ltd. 972-2-589-4529 PO Box 23012 Fax: 972-2-589-4578 Jerusalem, Israel ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: ER/Win vs Designer/2000 - Which is better? We will be using the software for the following tasks: Entity-Relationship Diagrams Logical Modeling Physical Modeling Maintaining a Data Repository Automatically generate Oracle DDL from the Repository Reverse Re-Engineer Oracle Tables back into the repository If anyone can give me some feedback on whether or not you have used 1 or both of these tools. Let me know your experience (good or bad) with each of these tools. If there is other software we should look at please let me know this as well. Thanks in advance! Nathan Nathan G.
