First, you should stop the session from attempting to create locks. Find out what the query was doing to cause a lot of locks to be used. If a major update/delete/insert then consider exclusively locking the table before running the query. If you have multiple updating sessions, you might want to consider increasing the $INFORMIXDIR/etc/$ONCONFIG LOCKS parameter (there is a limit -- check the release notes $INFORMIXDIR/release/*/*). Would have to have more info to give you more info....
