In article <325A85D8.7483@napier.com>, Daniel Caskey <dcaskey@earthlink.net> writes >Has anyone ever had an Oracle DB on the same box with an Informix DB? > >I may be trying to put them on a SPARC 20 and am concerned about >compatability and tuning issues. > >What kind of problems did you encounter? if any. > >Daniel Caskey >dcaskey@napier.com In my previous job I used a machine which had Oracle/Sybase/Ingres on it as well as two free text database server (Brs/Fulcrum) and a workflow product (Staffware) all running at the same time. Also we had several sets of in-house servers running. I used all of these except Fulcrum at one time or another and helped admin the machine. Main things to look for are a) Increase kernel limits associated with shared memory and semaphores. Informix Online uses them and so does Oracle. b) Increase kernel limits to do with number of processes and number of processes per user. c) Have plenty of swap. d) Watch Oracle - I did see it leave lots of defunct processes around but there was a patch for this. You would need to tune each server separatly. You might get conflicts in the use of shared memory, check how each product assigns shared memory keys (only a problem if you run Informix Online). E-mail me with the version of the Informix engine you are using for more info. -- David Williams
