Apart from when tables are fragmented, can they be regarded as truly : unique, in terms of pointing to a particular row, for the lifetime of a : table? Absolutely. It's also guaranteed in your scenario that the rowid of a row will remain the same for the lifetime of that row. : 2. Is it faster to to get a record using it's rowid rather than it's serial : id. (if there is one)? Definitely. A rowid is a value derived from the logical page number of a row and it's slot table entry on that logical page. So with a rowid, OnLine knows exactly what page to grab to grab the row you want, without having to search anything. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Glidden Sr. Advanced Support Engineer E-mail: glidden@informix.com Advanced Support (415) 926-6904 Informix Software, Inc. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
