I agree that update statistics would help you. And definitely you should perform it. Some additions about the error message: If you are using more than one connection to database server, you have to use tlitcp connections (you can't use shared memory connections). So, you have to add an alias to your database server in your $ONCONFIG file and an entry for this server alias in your sqlhosts file. This entry should have as protocol a tcp or stream (not shared memory) connection (i.e. onsoctcp or ontlitcp). See your server release notes for supported connection types. Then you just have to set the INFORMIXSERVER env. variable accordingly.
