loading a jpg into a byte field

IDS 7.30.TC3 NT40 SP4 I need to load jpg's or bmp's into a byte field. How do i do that? ESQL/C, 4GL, NEWERA, etc... are not options. Our application is written in smalltalk and uses odbc to access Informix (Intersolv 3.11), Oracle, and MSSQL databases. I have seen references to using dbload, but can't get any real info on how to use it to actually load the jpg... I also saw something in a previous post that mentioned having to convert the jpg file to ascii first????
