As the person who did most of the work on the Linux module that supports non-Linux binaries I can tell you it is just as easy to reverse engineer applications on other Unices. I can single step right down to the assembly level, I can trace system calls, I can patch code on the fly... >Please also note that the companies you mentioned, WordPerfect, >Correl, etc ... are approaching the Linux marketplace out of >desparation. It would not behoove Informix to have the appearances >of doing the same. They don't think so. They think they are approaching the Linux market because there is business to be done there. That seems to be good market awareness - just about every trade mag that has landed on my desk in the last couple of months has mentioned the L-word in editorial or articles and it is now being asked for in job adverts, both trade and in general newspapers. The boat seems to be casting off at the very least :-). I can also tell you that more than one Informix engineer has told me about their experiences both of running SCO versions of products and compiling native Linux versions. Informix could have a Linux presence tomorrow - although the high end database engines would take longer - if they wanted. I can also tell you that although the big vendors, Oracle and Informix, don't have Linux products yet there are plenty of smaller vendors with Linux database products and they *are* taking low end business that would otherwise have gone Informix or Oracle by default. Some of this is driven by the needs of developers who already use Linux a lot, some is driven by customers who already have Linux systems and just want to use what they have rather than be messed around by suits on commission.
