Changing retrieval order of an informix-generated form using isql
Posted in 1992
This is an ex-peeve that bugged me a little, until a colleague pointed out a solution: I noticed, when using an ISQL-generated form, that querying for all rows, from ISQL, didn't fetch them in lexical order. "Why should it?" I later thought. But then again, how do I force it to do this without writing a 4GL program? The rows in the table occurred in some order, but it wasn't lexically sorted by default. One way to achieve sortedness is to specify a *clustered* index for the table. This will sort the rows in the same order as the specified index. Then, when fetching rows, they will be lexically sorted based on the index. I hope this helps newcomers (I'm still one :-) ). -- "The Battle of the Gulf was won on the playing fields of Atari" - J.
