time it takes to establish connection

hello all, on some days establishing a connection to our production server through server studio or similiar sql editor (hp-UX 11.i, IDS 9.40 FC3) takes no time at all and other days it takes up to 15 seconds to connect. i see nothing in the message log about the differences. can anyone point me where to look to find out why it takes so long some days? thanks! tom
