Check. No you copy the existing $ONCONFIG file to the new filename and
edit it changing the SERVERNUM, DBSERVERNAME, and DBSERVERALIASES as
well as the ROOTDBS also enter new values for MSGPATH and if CONSOLE is
a disk file new value for that also. Adjust any other parameters
(perhaps you don't want as many BUFFERS for this instance, etc). If
you are using an intelligent ALARMPROGRAM you may need to make it aware
of its name (argv[0]/$0) and react accordingly then make a linked name
for each instance and use that name in the ALARMPROGRAM parameter or
make separate programs/scripts for each. Same thing for the
SYSALARMPROGRAM if you are using 7.30+. Also if you are allowing core
dumps you may want the startup/boot script for each engine to cd to a
different directory so that you can isolate their core and shared
memory dump files.

Check.

OK.
4. Edit $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts and add the new DBSERVERNAME and
DBSERVERALIASES entries with their respective service names and
protocols.
5. Initialize the engine (onmonitor or oninit -i).
Then:

Yes.
7. > 5. Set parameters?? (which ??)
Whatever seems goodly to you. The important ones were set in the
initial mods to the ONCONFIG file.

Almost.

If backups will take too long you will need separate devices for each
engine instance otherwise you can share a tape drive(s) just set the
appropriate INFORMIXSERVER and ONCONFIG values in memory and run ontape
or onbar as usual.
Phew, I think that that's everything important anyway.
