Backup and restore from a named pipe with ontape
Posted in 2008
Karl Oliver wanted to pipe an ontape level-0 backup on an HP-UX box straight into a restore on another machine via a named pipe, to avoid an sftp file transfer. His backup aborted with "Interrupt received" after the tape-mount prompt. Paul Watson confirmed named pipes do work and suggested testing the pipe with a simple echo/read; Richard Snoke suggested setting TAPEDEV to STDIO and redirecting ontape output into the pipe, though Martin Fuerderer said a named pipe as TAPEDEV works locally. No fix was found: Karl concluded the named pipe was faulty and abandoned the approach, noting the pipe method was slower than plain sftp for the 45 GB file.

Hello all
I am trying to backup on one server and restore on another using named pipes
Supposedly this works see
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=0&dc=DB520&q1=ontape&q2=named+pipe&u
id=swg21109986&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8&lang=
has anyone tried it ?
I am tring to get the restore process done faster by using this method- in
effect eliminate the sftp process from machine to machine.
As machines are on diffrent networks we cant use NFS on the operating system
we are using - HPUX
We are using informix 11 for the initail test
can anyone help me please
Have you tried it ?
Yes it does work
Cheers
Paul

yes have tried it and cant get it to work the backup fails with
Interrupt. I assume the Interrupt is coming from the system I am trying to
restore to
backup [informix wuast130 ast130_ecmp_dba] ontape -s -L 0
Please mount tape 1 on /backup/backup_pipe and press Return to continue ...
Interrupt received ...
/backup [informix wuast130 ast130_ecmp_dba]
OK make the named pipe and instead of running a backup to just echo "Test
me\\
" - read from the other end of the pipe, if that doesn't work then the
pipe is not working
Cheers
Paul

Hi,
I'm pretty sure a pipe as the value of TAPEDEV won't work. The engine is
checking to find out if TAPEDEV points to an ordinary file or a directory,
and a pipe is neither of those. It's a special file.
I believe what you need to do is create the pipe, set TAPEDEV to STDIO,
and redirect ontape to the pipe: ontape -s -L 0 > /backup/backup_pipe.
That way the pipe is written to as a file and ought to work.
Cheers,

Hi,
sorry, but: No.
ontape works with a named pipe. I used it recently for a test.
It was a local named pipe, though, not a remote one (i.e.
the named pipe was created on the same machine where I
ran ontape).
I did all this on a Unix system (maybe it was Linux).
Certainly it was not Windows. (I don't even know whether
named pipes exist on Windows.)
Regards,
Martin

we have determined that there is a problem with the named pipe and given up on the idea. Futhermore we have deterrmined that putting a large file across the network using pipe method takes longer that a simple sftp transfer. File in question 45 gig.
