It is the way informix handles raw devices. The access is faster on most unixes through the character device (although dd should be faster with a block device, but what counts is the Informix access type). But it depends on the OS: For Linux e.g. you do not have to use character devices any more if you are using kaio (libaio should be present). At least, that is what I have learned about raw devices.
