The concensus is that KAIO is better than AIO VPs. At Bloomberg we are
using AIO VPs with twice the performance of KAIO but that is either:
1) Platform dependency (DGUX does not have built in Kernel Asynch IO)
2) A result of the advanced task affinity scripts we use (we affine all
oninit processes assigning VPs within each class to processors
independently of the other classes and in such a way that the busiest
CPU VPs and the busiest AIO VPs run on different processors) or
3) Some combination of both
On our platform the DG port team found 50% better performance from KAIO
over AIO VP using Informix processor affinity (which only affines CPU
class VPs). Using affinity scripts and utilities DG techs helped us
develop we get 20% better performance than Informix affinity with AIO
VPs both ways and 100% better performance using AIO VPs and our scripts
over KAIO with our scripts.
No one has tried to duplicate our results from Data General Aviion M88K
platforms on any other platform yet. We are testing Informix on Sun
platforms and you can be sure that I will test our methods there in the
future.
Overall all of the reports that I have seen about the HP platform lean
heavily toward KAIO. Just keep our results in mind.
