RE: I dropped from 3.5GB of RAM to 2.5GB and 4GL quit working
Posted in 2006
After physically swapping 1GB of RAM out of a Linux (RedHat 7.3) box running IDS 7.31.UD8, all compiled 4GL programs began dying with a segmentation fault at runtime (strace showed the crash just after reading the GLS locale file en_us/0333.lco); recompiling didn't help and no core file was produced. One reply suggested lowering onconfig memory parameters (BUFFERS, LOCKS, DS_MEMORY) for the smaller RAM; the poster did that, then put the RAM back and restored the original onconfig, but the segfault persisted. Another suggested hardware damage, though all other services on the box ran fine. The thread ends with jokes and no recorded resolution.

Anthony Are you running an IDS Engine on thi sbox as well? If so have you changed the onconfig file to take account of the reduced memory? Keith, Thanks for the thoughts. Yes, there is an IDS engine on the box as well -- and I went through and changed those around. However, this is a relatively "critical" system, so I shut it down and replaced the RAM. It's back at 3.5GB. I restored the onconfig files, etc... and we're still getting the SegV fault. -- Anthony Simmons, Keith wrote: > Anthony > > Are you running an IDS Engine on thi sbox as well? Perhaps.
We've got a RAID-1 setup, and I won't discount the theory. However,
our web server, sendmail, oninit, java, tomcat, postgreSQL, and jabberd
(all of which run on this same box) -- ran without any problems today.
The only issue we've had (that I've seen) is the seg fault on the 4GL
programs.

Perhaps that's because they kick the parts that other programs don't reach.
