Re: using BLOBs

Online Dynamic Server 7.2x is incredibly powerful and fast with BLOBs. This also depends upon whether or not they are stored in the dbspace or blobspace. We load between 450,000 to 1.1 million 2 to 4k blobs daily in a fragmented table in about 3 to 4 hours without a hitch. Retrieving them is very fast as well. It is important to not that (at least with Solaris 2.5.1) Informix's uses 2k pages (even though the operating system uses 8k). For blobs that fit neatly in a page, we have seen insert rates of 6/10th of a second whereas >2k blobs 1.1 seconds. Mind you, these metrics are from a SUN Enterprise 6000 with 12 CPU and 8 GB of memory. Don't even bother thinking about Oracle 8's Large Object support - it sucks and doesn't even come close to the maturity of the technology in Informix.
