How can I feeing space in a Informix Database
Posted in 2006
MikeHeide deleted many rows but saw no space freed. Obnoxio suggested unload/reload, ALTER FRAGMENT or ALTER INDEX TO CLUSTER. Mark Scranton said extents once allocated are not freed automatically and that freeing unused space was being considered for future IDS releases. Malcolm Weallans added that deleted space is reused, so chunks will not run out.

I have deleted many rows in on table, but it seems that this has no effect on the total used space by the database. So it will be in a short time that the database is running out of free chunks in a short time. Who can help?

We are considering the freeing of "unused space" like this in future releases of IDS. OTC's recommendations are correct... Thanks - Mark.
Despite the advice given by Obnoxio and Mark Scranton the situation is not as bad as you think. The system will re-use the deleted space. So you won't run out of chunks. You might notice a small performance degradation if the data is normally accessed sequentially but most systems don't. The real answer with all sysadmin issues is "Don't Panic".
